Information

CDT Sanctum is a contemporary blackletter that pulls gothic letterforms into a digital, brutalist register. It drops traditional broad-nib construction for sharp geometry, compact spacing, and a display sensibility shaped by brutalism, terminal interfaces, and contemporary culture.

Blackletter is one of the oldest written forms in the Latin alphabet, shaped by the broad nib and the dense medieval page. Sanctum keeps that density and texture but rebuilds the skeleton from scratch. The calligraphic stroke is gone, replaced by flat terminals, hard angles, and a geometry that owes more to a screen than a pen. Up close it stops looking medieval and starts looking like something built recently.

The proportions are condensed and the spacing is tight, so the typeface holds its colour at large sizes and sets dense, architectural lines. Capitals carry weight and structure. The lowercase keeps the vertical rhythm of blackletter without the ornament that normally comes with it. A set of ligatures cleans up the awkward joins this kind of letterform tends to produce, so the texture stays even.

Sanctum is a single-weight display face for headlines, posters, covers, and identities. It draws on Gothic architecture, illuminated manuscripts, and sacred space, but uses them as raw material. The reference points are medieval. The execution is not. It is a contemporary take on a gothic tradition rather than a fantasy revival.

The character set includes full diacritics and extended Latin coverage, with support for more than 300 languages,
